Fishes are our friends. Fishes, as all sentient beings, are miraculous creatures. Like humans, they feel happiness, they can suffer, they build communities and families, they solve their problems. For more information on these miraculous beings, visit www.FishFeel.org. This soup is a fish-less variation of the traditional "fisherman's soup", often concocted to make use of scathed fishes that would be unsellable on their own. One only needs a knife, a pot, and a fire (and good company, preferably on a beach or a boat). We fill the pot with water, coarsely cut the ingredients, and simmer for an hour. That's all. Simplicity and cleanliness in full strength. By the way, the kitchen smells like sea breeze during cooking! Enjoy another whole and healthier version of a traditional dish!

This recipe has been developed with the enjoyable help of Genevieve.

Ingredients

3,5 lt (approx. 14 cups) water
1 kg potatoes (4 medium to large sized)
2 carrots
2 onions
1 cup (packed) chopped celery
4 Tbs brown rice
0.5 tsp salt
1/8 tsp black pepper
(optional) 1 sheet of nori (cut in large chunks, if you want to remove it after cooking, or in bit-sized chunks if you want to eat it). The nori sheet gives a sea smell to the soup.

How to do it

  • Fill a big pot with the water. Every ingredient that you will handle/cut, will go there.
  • Rinse the potatoes and cut them in large chunks.
  • Rinse the carrots and slice them.
  • Peel the onion and chop it coarsely (you can even leave it whole).
  • Rinse and coarsely chop the celery.
  • Chop the nori sheet.
  • Add all the chopped ingredients in the water, then add the rice, and increase the heat to maximum, until the water reaches a boil. Then reduce the heat to a slow simmer (eg 4/9) and cook, loosely covered, for an hour. Depending on your preference for a "soupier" soup, you may some water during cooking.
  • When you turn off the heat, stir vigorously to smash a few potato chunks.
Serve hot with freshly ground black pepper and (ideally) fresh warm homemade bread.

---------------------------------
If you are not vegan, please go vegan. Veganism is about nonviolence. First and foremost, it’s about nonviolence to other sentient beings. But it’s also about nonviolence to the earth and nonviolence to yourself.

And never, ever buy into the nonsensical notion that we need to promote “happy exploitation” in order to get people to go vegan. It’s the opposite: the entire “happy exploitation” industry has one goal: to make the public more comfortable about animal exploitation.

Veganism is OUR choice. We have the ability to say no to violence. We have the ability to affirm the personhood of animals. We have the ability to reject the status of animals as property. We have the ability to say no to speciesism. We have the ability to solve the problem of animal exploitation in the only way it can be solved: by abolishing the demand for animal products.

FishFeel.org.
